Digital X-Rays

January has been a bit of a rollercoaster month for us here at the office. As some of our patients already know, we installed a digital x-ray system, along with 2 computer monitors in every treatment room. We had a few bumpy weeks of x-rays getting “lost” and computers shutting down, but now I can say with confidence that we are becoming a digital office!

The transition is exciting: digital x-rays have better clarity, more contrast and use less radiation than traditional films. It’s been difficult learning the tricks of how to position a digital sensor instead of film, but the assistants and hygienists and jumped in feet first! I really want to thank all of my staff for embracing this new technology and being more than willing to try everything. Now I just have to become an expert at reading the films!

This is just the first step in becoming a paperless office. Our goal is to have no more paper charts. This will help us be a little greener and open up some space in our front area for more workstations. It will be a long transition as we decide how to navigate these uncharted waters! I want to thank our great patients, as well, for being so understanding during our transitions. We are always working toward making our practice better and more modern.

Happy Holidays!

Dear Patients,

Wow! It’s December and the holidays are upon us. I would like to wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year!

We are very excited about an upcoming change in our office. In January we will install computers throughout the office as part of a transition to digital x-rays and paperless charting.

This will be a lengthy transition as we work out the kinks, but we’re excited to embrace this new technology which will modernize our office and make us more efficient. Please be patient with us as we get used to all of the new tools and techniques!

During the holiday season, the office will remain open and the hygienists will continue to see patients. However, I will be out of the office from December 22 through January 10. My husband, Marc, and I are travelling to South America and are very excited to visit Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Jennifer will be here to answer phones and there will be coverage for any dental emergencies. The office will be completely closed on December 23, 26 and January 2 for holiday observance.

If you have dental treatment that needs to be completed before the end of the year to utilize insurance benefits or FSA funds, please call now to schedule an appointment.

Thank you for your continued support and for allowing me to be part of your lives as your dentist!

All the Best,

Dr. Stefanie Shore and Staff

Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene can seem like a mundane topic, but it’s always helpful to review. No matter how old you are it’s a good idea to have a refresher course in how to clean your mouth– that includes brushing, flossing, and cleaning your tongue.

Colgate has some great resources on their website that shows good oral hygiene techniques. Take a look– hope you learn something!

Lasers in Dentistry

Lasers are one of the new exciting technologies in dentistry. There are different types of lasers with different purposes. There are lasers that can cut gum tissue, ones that can drill and prepare teeth, and others that can cut away bone. The most common is the soft tissue laser, called a diode. This is used to help remove excess gum tissue, stop bleeding in the gums, remove nodules on the lips and inside the mouth, heal canker sores and do frenectomies.

Lasers are an exciting new thing. They allow us dentists to do things we weren’t able to do as easily before. I most often use my laser to remove excess gum tissues and stop areas from bleeding. It’s helpful and fun to use, and it definitely sounds cool when I tell my patients, “Oh, I’ll just use my laser for that.” Last week I attended a Laser Course in Sacramento all about my diode laser. I learned some exciting new uses for it that I can’t wait to try out!

There’s always new research coming out about uses for lasers and their efficacy. Don’t be surprised if, in 5 years, a laser is used at every dental appointment you have. The future of laser dentistry certainly is
exciting.

To all of my patients…

Just had a great day in the office, mostly due to the nice people I got to treat and chat with throughout the day. I’m lucky to have fantastic staff members who are good at their jobs and care deeply about the work they do. But I’m also lucky to have a fantastic pool of patients. Everyday I enjoy getting up and going to work knowing that I’ll spend my time with nice, genuine and interesting people. I always learn a lot from my conversations and I have a lot of fun! So, I just wanted to give a little shout out to all of my patients and thank them for being who they are.

Discount Dental Plans

This is an exasperating subject, and one that I could speak about at length. More and more insurance companies are offering what they call “discount plans”. Smile Savers is an example. The company sells it fairly cheap and claims you can use it for all of your dental needs. This is probably the most economical individual dental insurance plan out there. Seems great, right?

Well, not so much. When you read the fine print on these plans you’ll discover that there’s still significant out of pocket costs. You’ll also get a list of providers that accept the plan, and it will include
such illustrious places as Western Dental and Access Dental. Places you would have to pay me to just walk in the door there’s so much scary stuff going on in there. The reason there are limited offices to go to is that this plan doesn’t do much for the doctor. It forces the office to drastically discount their fees for a few patients in return, and causes the offices to try to “up-sell” patients to make a few extra bucks. This means, in my opinion, that no self-respecting dentist would accept these plans.

I think when everything is said and done, if you’d saved the money you spent investing in becoming part of the plan, you’d have more money available to pay for appropriate dental treatment in a nice office.

Why Do I Get Canker Sores?

Canker sores are an autoimmune response to some sort of stress. In English, when you body comes in contact with a trigger, the canker sore develops as a response. What are the triggers? Well, in some people its stress. In others, it’s food. Citrus fruits, spicy foods, walnuts and strawberries have all been proven to cause canker sores. Another trigger is Cinnamon flavored things—gum, candy, mouth rinse, even toothpaste. Many people are allergic to the artificial flavoring.

How to treat a canker sore? Well, you usually will want it to run its course. It will take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to go away, but it always will. Avoid your “triggers” during this time.  If it’s really painful and not going away, see your dentist. There is a treatment called Debacterol that can be used in the office or a prescription for an ointment can be given.
